Get Back on Track: How to Create a Career Plan

As a Houston, Texas recruitment firm, we know that most people go through a stagnant point in their career. But if you’ve been in a rut for quite some time, you may want to take a step back and evaluate where you’ve been and where it is you want to go. You can do that by creating a career plan.

A career plan can help you hone in on your true career objectives, develop the steps you need to take in order to achieve those objectives, and monitor your progress. In essence, a career plan can help you get back on track and achieve career success.

Here’s how to get started:

Self evaluate.

It’s time to look inward and be honest with yourself about your career goals. What is it you truly want to achieve? To become a CEO, start your own business, or maintain a better work life balance? How you answer this question will determine the steps you need to take to achieve you ultimate career goals.

Research.

Take some time to research the qualifications, training, advanced degrees (if any), and experience you need to reach your goals. If, for instance, you want to start your own company and be your own boss, research the steps you’ll need to take and the skills you’ll need in order to set up your business. For instance, should you be a sole proprietor, or should you incorporate? Finding out answers to these critical questions will help you feel more empowered.

Develop a plan.

Now it’s time to create a plan of action to help you achieve your career goals. One way to do that is by breaking the plan down into small, yet achievable, goals you can accomplish in 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, etc. For instance, using the example of starting your own business, you should start reading books and magazines about establishing and managing your own business within 6 months. Within 1 year, you should take a bookkeeping course at the local community college to learn about maintaining the books for a small business. You get the picture.

Review regularly.

Once you’ve created your career plan, doesn’t mean you’re done. You’ll need to review it regularly (once a quarter) to monitor your progress and adjust it as needed. During the review process, don’t be too much of a stickler; be open to modifying your plan if it will help you accomplish your goals faster.
